Vocal Point is first and foremost dedicated to sharing our members’ talent and passion for music with our community. We strive to create an environment that is welcoming and supports the idea of creating harmony through harmony. As a result, we want to make sure that people of various gender identities and voice parts know that they are welcome to audition for and be a part of our group. In an effort to portray this message, we have revised our group identity to now perform under the name Vocal Point A Cappella, and we have retired the title Vocal Point All-Female A Cappella. We have identified three main pillars that we seek to uphold through this change towards further gender inclusivity. These pillars are as follows:
Honoring Our History: Vocal Point was founded as the first and only all-female musical group at the University of Rochester in 1969. We recognize the importance of creating a safe space to uplift female voices, and we wish to extend this safe space to others who share marginalized gender identities. Empowerment & Diversity: We aim to empower all past, present, and future members of Vocal Point with this change towards further gender inclusivity. We welcome a diverse set of voices and experiences to our group. We will continue to uplift artists of diverse genders and backgrounds through our song selection. Support & Cohesion: We aim to cultivate a supportive musical community and we hope to continue to be a space for support, kindness, and love. We strive to be cohesive, both in our music making and with our group dynamic. In doing so, we hope to bring together those who love to make music. We appreciate all the support we have in our community and look forward to sharing more music. Interested in becoming a Vocal Point member?
